Is it a form of flattery or just stealing some one's work? I don't know I am not an artist. The tank on my bike was my idea I thought ? and was executed by a friend & artist[J.Edwards].Personally I don't care that they are close in appearance. They are really different and this bike is probably far far away. I guess I will ask you all..Is there anybody out there that wants to be different anymore?? Does anybody care ?? Maybe he was first..it looks like he was ??Chime in if you like...
The one Edwards did is A DANDY!
ReplyDeleteThe one on the Jap Shovel LOOKS to be a CHEAP attempt of a copy.
GOD BLESS JOHN EDWARDS & AMERICA!!!
JUNKMAN
Saw that bike on somebodys blog, thought it was your tank, I'd take it as a compliment. The Japanese seem to take the coolest shit and twist it, so there you go!
ReplyDeletei saw that and starting laughing......davis, you rippin` cool chopper dudes of THEIR super cool ideas?
ReplyDeletelame. seeing people do that shit always bums me out.
ReplyDeleteYeah yeah I love all the Japanese stuff too.But that's just a cheap rip off.The Edwards tank is in another league.
ReplyDeleteHey don't get me wrong. I am glad just to see people making cool motorcycles.I just never think about making mine look exactly like someone elses. The guys in Japan have their own killer style and generally don't need to do this?? Either way I don't care I just though you might be tired of naked chicks??
ReplyDeleteI have had harleys (panheads) since the 60's and some of those folks forget where they (HARLEYS) are made and these Great Pioneers whom had made them a work of art.
ReplyDeleteMike D. & John E. will be thought of in 20 years like we look at Roth and some of the other great icons that live in this GREAT country.Boys you can't do the s&!^ we do in these other country's without the hammer dropping!RIDE ON!RIDE FREE!
JUNKMAN
tired of naked chicks? no way.. in a way i would be flattered, but i see where you are coming from mike..
ReplyDeleteThe real shame is they didn't bother to jack your impeccable taste in the process.
ReplyDeleteBoth bikes look great. I saw that yellowmc.jp bike in early 2008 with that paint and loved the seat too, I've been wondering which paint job was done first after seeing the wicked edwards job here this spring. Anyways, who cares, both look amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments. If that bike was done in 08 then they guy who painted it and me are sharing the same brain.Which is possible! I have had that paint layout for a couple years but John painted my tank a few months back.Either way it's fine. The other bike is real cool and strange things do happen.
ReplyDeleteMike, I could be wrong but, could swear I saw another bike (old 60's photo), with the same style paint.
ReplyDeleteAs an artist, I've come up with some stuff and seen others that did the same without knowing it.
BTW, yours looks much better than on the shovel.
Chris, you could be and with your knowledge probably are right. The style of the paint job has been done before [panels with a hatch marks] I was thinking more about the black and color choices. The reality is that paint job could have been done before mine and we just have the same taste in colors.
ReplyDeleteSometimes you think are being original and you find out your not.Hey Chris, thanks for the words.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about? That bike looks nothing like yours!! I mean, his use of purple grips, and a black rear fender... totally different!
ReplyDelete(when is somebody going to figure out how to show sarcasim in print?)
Who cares. None of this is new. Isn't this style of bike just a replica of what was done in the late 60's? Just build what you like. Take it as a compliment. Your blog rules!
ReplyDeleteJunkman thanks for the what you said and your thoughts on the topic. It's just something to discuss it's really not a big deal to me but well noted.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteHey Mike I get what you are asking and like you said both bikes are cool and different so it's not a big deal...but what if that bike was a local guy and did the same paint? It is almost hard to be original after all the really cool shit has been done. But you and others are giving it a good try.keep it up.also I never get tired of seeing all those tities so please don't stop.I am bored at work and need double d's to cope with work. Thanks Pat
ReplyDeleteWeel atleast the look alike went all out with a sweet fender. Damn Mikey, you really dropped the ball on that one! lol
ReplyDeletewhoa. double mint. kinda odd.
ReplyDeletelike johns paint.... alot!!!
guess they do too.
You make your mark profiting off of 40 - 50 year old ideas of other people; don't be a hypocrite. Or should Yellow MC have waited until 2049?
ReplyDeleteN. aXE If you read what I said you will see I am asking a question to the people who look at this blog.Do you care about doing something somewhat different or do you want to be sheep! I can't stress this again I know the paint job is not original and everything has been done before and I make money on old ideas!! I got it!.I have been doing this a while and understand I know nothing! .I was trying to generally discuss what happens alot to painters and builders and I am neither.Their work gets copied alot real quick.. and doing something 30 years later is not what I am a talking about. This is an open question to all thats why I posted your comment.I don't think I am above this it's just something to talk about.I don't what this post going sideways...
ReplyDeleteThe YellowMC bike is in the Japanese Mag Street Bikers' June 2008 Issue, page 117.
ReplyDeleteoriginality is awesome. in my eyes since i cant paint worth a shit and my two favorite painters are max schaff and john edwards if they painted something for me i would tell them what colors not to use and let them run with it and the japenese thing all of there stuff is pretty much copys of shit that was done here first i got the copy of hcc with dustins sportster on the front and all the jap sportsters in that dude look like shit that has been done except the sporty lookin shit there a little og on that but still close. and that is a half ass replica of ur tank mike.
ReplyDeletelook what i've started...i think?
ReplyDeletei posted that yellow mc bike and i didnt put two and two together. i dig yellows bike, i love johns bike's and paint. there was a bike at cool breaker this year with basically the same paint i am running. its bound to happen and prob won't be the last.....i could give a shit. mike see ya on sunday!
Cool T bone sunday it is....I am getting a lot of anonymous posts on this topic and it's cool to get so many people fired up but please read through the posts and read what I have said and others before saming the same shit. It's not about my tank and this motorcycle who cares!!It's to find out what people think about building something different and can it be done.
ReplyDeletepeople that ride motorcycles are gay............
ReplyDeletei wouldve said something too..this is indeed your house..
ReplyDeletethis is something PERSONAL...u know?....maybe they shouldve waitied to bite your shit,or kinda said 'replica of so&so'...either way, writings on the wall.
Stand up for something or fucking fall for anything.
nice work by the way.
What came first the chicken or the egg?...Who gives a shit. The fact is your tank blows that thing away, i've seen it up close and is one of the best "subtle" paints jobs around.
ReplyDeletehey Mike/John welcome to the club. I've had so many paintjobs copied i lost count. I used to be bummed out about it, especially when i was broke and these people who were paying someone else to have copies of my work out there could have just had me paint them an original. but its really flattery,(EXCEPT when it comes to t-shirt businesses and poseurs-and we all know what i mean) no one copies stuff that sucks, i mean when you cheat at school-do you want to copy off of the dumb kids test/homework? At least Mindpill turned the tables and had a copy done of a Japanese paintjob(and had the decency to admit it).
ReplyDeleteMike/John's paint is amazing and fits the bike perfectly, everything looks so good.
ReplyDeleteHowever in this particular case, to be fair to yellowmc, they painted their bike at least 1 year before Mike and John.
But back to Mike's questions about originality? Who really cares unless you're getting ripped off and someone else is profiting large from your work. I don't think that is the case here. Both bikes are cool in my book. Both parties were keeping it real and just expressing their own creativity.
I like Mike's better, but again, to be fair to yellowmc, when looking at these 2 bikes, they executed the paint scheme first.

ReplyDeletescroll down a bit , i guess this tank is from the late 60s or early 70s
nothing is new
everyone need to chill and enjoy life ,bikes =life
peace
Well it's 2:00 and I am on the way to the hospital for kid #4 it's looks I will miss the ride...but it will go on.I just got another comment on this topic and I guess people do care one way or the other. This will be the last comment on this for me.The yellow mc bike was painted before mine and well done.I have never seen the bike before so I got caught off guard with the paint.I have always tried to do things a little different but maybe even if you think you are your really not. It's good to see the passion from everyone.
ReplyDeleteEveryone rips off everyone.
ReplyDeletePeople copy Harpoon who copied Finch. People copy Dali who copied Ernst. People copy Zeppelin who copied Sabbath. Its all good cuz it changes everytime. That tank isn't a straight knock-off, its got differnent colors and, in my opinion, that works for me, I like it better. But thats my own. People who complain about others biting them are insecure. We all bite. None of us invented metalflake or choppers or Vans. At least its from a different country...everyone in FLA copies French Kiss (who copied Harpoon who copied...whoever) to their face.. in their own state. It probably sucks to have a piece of art from the obvious God of Awesome (just ask anyone who is cool) and see a similar piece of art somewhere else. Who cares what we think anyway. Ya buncha trendy bastards...get back in that garage and repaint it if its a big deal.
By the way, nice tank. Great job.
And nice vintage tits, too. Thank you for that.
Oh and congrats on the new young'un. Sounds like a housefull.
